Marquita

While starting to sing at age three and growing up watching the Grand Ole Opry, it was obvious early on in life that music would be a huge part of it for Marquita.

Fast forward a few years and less than a month into her post-secondary journey toward a theatre degree, and 18-year-old Marquita Walsh has jump started her performing career with the release of her first CD.

It’s a reflection of the past, as the young singer/songwriter’s performing career began so long ago in her hometown of Fleur De Lys, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the surrounding communities that she can barely remember when it all started. She remembers she wrote her first song at age 12, but the rest is much of a blur.
At age 12, with money saved from her paper route, Marquita recorded her first original track called “This Way”. During that summer she sold 400 copies and couldn’t wait for the time to come when she could complete a full album.

Her first big opportunity as a performer came in the ninth grade when she was invited to open a concert for Canadian Recording Artist Rex Goudie at Mile One Centre in St. John’s – Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital city.

Marquita’s performance was so impressive, Rex personally contributed to her album in a big way, by lending his vocals to several of Marquita’s songs – particularly “With You” a catchy tune describing a conversation between two people who apparently have apprehension about being together. As for the rest of the album, she describes her collection of 10 tunes as “modern country rock songs with my own flair.”

“Singing and writing songs is who I am and what I want to do,” she says. Inspiration for her songs comes from her own life. “I don’t always like to show emotion (outwardly),” she explains. “When I feel it, I write it. Lots of times what makes up the song are things I can’t say to people.”
